Can India get permanent seat at SC

PAKISTAN is concerned over the US pledge to make India a permanent member of the Security Council while the foreign office has termed it as being detrimental to the regional balance of power. But let us have a pragmatic view of the matter. As far as India`s permanent membership is concerned, it is unlikely that this will happen in the near future.

First, the UN has to amend its charter, especially Article 23, in order to generate the sixth place for India. For this a twothirds majority is required in the General Assembly with the complete cooperation of the five permanent members and the 10 non-permanent of members of the Security Council. This is unlikely to happen.

Second, if India is to replace an existing permanent member, which country will vacate its seat from the US, UK, France, Russia or China? Third, Germany and Brazil are more eligible for a permanent seat because their economic indicators and their contribution to world peace are higher than India.

Lastbutnotleast,Pakistanhas a strategic importance that the US cannot take away from it no matter how fond Washington may grow of New Delhi.
