GLOBAL warming in World and Pakistan situation : NO INDUS RIVER in 30 to 40 years

Global warming and climate change are terms for the observed century-scale rise in the average temperature of the Earth'sclimate system and its related effects.
Multiple lines of scientific evidence show that the climate system is warming.Although the increase of near-surface atmospheric temperature is the measure of global warming often reported in the popular press, most of the additional energy stored in the climate system since 1970 has gone into ocean warming. The remainder has melted ice, and warmed the continents and atmosphere. Many of the observed changes since the 1950s are unprecedented over decades to millennia.

The Basics

Carbon dioxide and other global warming pollutants are collecting in the atmosphere like a thickening blanket, trapping the sun's heat and causing the planet to warm up.
Although local temperatures fluctuate naturally, over the past 50 years the average global temperature has increased at the fastest rate in recorded history. Scientists say that unless we curb the emissions that cause climate change, average U.S. temperatures could be 3 to 9 degrees higher by the end of the century.

How it effect us or can potentially harm us?

This has been the warmest decade since 1880. In 2010, global surface temperatures tied 2005 as the warmest on record, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Scientists say that the earth could warm by an additional 7.2 degrees Fahrenheit during the 21st century if we fail to reduce emissions from burning fossil fuels, such as coal and oil. This rise in average temperature will have far-reaching effects on the earth's climate patterns and on all living things. Many of these changes have already begun.

Weather patterns

Hot, dry weather led to a record-setting 2006 wildland fire season with close to 100,000 fires reported and nearly 10 million acres burned, 125 percent above the decade's average.

Health

In July 2006, severe heat waves in North America contributed to the deaths of at least 225 people.

Wildlife

Scientists report that some polar bears are drowning because they have to swim longer distances to reach ice floes. Unless we take effective action now, the polar bear will likely become extinct in Alaska by 2050.

Glaciers & sea levels

At the current rate of retreat, all of the glaciers in Glacier National Park will be gone by 2070.

‘Climate change a bigger threat than terrorism’ a Pakistan's

prospective

Published in Dawn, January 16th, 2015

ISLAMABAD: “Climate change poses a greater security threat than terrorism because it can affect temperatures, the environment, the economy and the future policies of the country. Moreover, 70 to 80 per cent of Pakistan’s water from glaciers, but in the next 30 to 40 years, there, may be no more water in the Indus River because the glaciers will have all melted.”

Pakistan was 135th among carbon emitting countries and contributed only 0.8 per cent to global carbon emissions. However, it is still included in the eight countries most vulnerable to the consequences of climate change.

“A considerable increase in intense floods, rains, extreme weather and other climatic changes has been noted in Pakistan. In the past the country saw well-distributed rains due, leading to the ripening of crops at the proper time. Now, temperature increases in the month of March cause ripening much earlier, reducing the yield of wheat and other crops,”

“The US has agreed to a 26 to 28 per cent reduction in carbon emissions to below 2005 levels, by 2025. However, the EU says it will reduce its carbon emissions by 40 per cent by 2030, bringing it back to 1990 levels,”

Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI) urged citizens to own their forests and prevent them from falling into the hands of the timber mafia.
